Family Therapy

Family therapy brings family members together to work through shared challenges with the guidance of a licensed clinician. It can help improve communication, reduce conflict, and strengthen relationships — regardless of the family structure or the concerns being addressed.

Who May Benefit From Family Therapy

Family therapy may be helpful for families dealing with a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Communication breakdowns or recurring conflict
  • Parent-child relationship difficulties
  • Adjusting to significant life changes — divorce, remarriage, relocation, or loss
  • Supporting a family member through mental health or behavioral challenges
  • Blended family adjustment and co-parenting concerns
  • Sibling conflict or family tension
  • Supporting adolescents and their caregivers together

Family therapy is not limited to families in crisis. Many families seek support to improve communication and build healthier relationship patterns before difficulties escalate.

What to Expect

  1. Request a callback. Contact our office or submit our online form. A team member will reach out within one business day.
  2. Insurance verification. Our administrative team contacts your insurance company to confirm coverage before the first session.
  3. Clinician matching. We help connect your family with a therapist based on your concerns, goals, and availability.
  4. Your first session. The first appointment is an intake — your therapist will get to know the family structure, the presenting concerns, and what you hope to work toward.
  5. Ongoing sessions. Sessions typically include the family members most relevant to the goals of therapy. Your therapist will guide the structure as treatment progresses.

Our Approach

Human Institute family therapists take a collaborative, non-blaming approach. Every family member is treated with respect, and sessions are designed to create a safe space where all voices can be heard. We work with families from diverse backgrounds and a wide range of family structures.

Family therapy is available in person at our Totowa, NJ office. Telehealth sessions may be available depending on clinician availability, location, and clinical appropriateness.

Note: Family therapy is not a substitute for legal advice, custody mediation, or child welfare services.
