He has taught mediation to countless students. Kabat-Zinn is unique in that he’s an academic and a spiritual person. His wealth of knowledge helps him relate to those in academia, scientists, and spiritual leaders. He is Professor of Medicine emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. It is there that he founded the renowned Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Clinic. Since 1979, Kabat-Zinn has been helping numerous people cope with psychological issues, usually mindfulness. He saw the connection between mindfulness and stress management. He noted how practicing mindful living had an incredibly powerful impact on people’s spiritual and emotional lives. In 1995, Kabat-Zinn started the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society. He has since retired from the medical center as of 2000. The Center for Mindfulness has expanded since that time. Dr. Saki Santorelli took over and helped it grow and flourish into an internally renowned institution.
